Kristin Romberg is an Associate Professor with primary affiliation in the Art History Program at the University of Illinois's School of Art and Design. She holds secondary appointments in the European Union Center, Russian, East European and Eurasian Center, Slavic Languages and Literatures, and the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory. Her research focuses on modern/contemporary art, particularly Russian and Soviet avant-garde movements, exploring intersections between art, political revolution, and material culture.
Education: PhD in Art History from Columbia University. Key research interests include Constructivism, mass media, and the reconfiguration of knowledge during cultural upheavals. She has curated exhibitions at major institutions like MoMA and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Recent work examines architectural and graphic design in interwar Soviet contexts, as seen in publications like *Engineer, Agitator, Constructor* (2020) and *Gan's Constructivism* (2018). Her scholarship bridges art history with critical theory, analyzing how visual culture shapes sociopolitical realities.
Grants and affiliations include support from the Getty Research Institute, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, and Harriman Institute. Current projects involve studying transnational exchanges between Soviet and Western avant-garde movements.
