Kristie J. Newton serves as Professor and Associate Dean for Educator Preparation and P-12 Partnerships in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Temple University's College of Education and Human Development. With extensive experience teaching middle and high school mathematics and conducting K-12 teacher professional development, her work bridges academic research and classroom practice.
Her research investigates mathematical cognition across learner spectra—from struggling students to experts—with emphasis on fraction knowledge transfer to algebra learning, cognitive flexibility, and misconception analysis. She examines how mathematical understanding interacts with motivational and instructional variables, particularly through urban STEM contexts involving robotics and game design.
Recent publications reveal consistent focus on foundational mathematical concepts' impact on advanced learning, with trends showing increasing integration of cognitive psychology frameworks in educational interventions. Her work demonstrates methodological diversity spanning experimental studies, longitudinal analyses, and design-based research in authentic educational settings.
Dr. Newton currently co-leads a U.S. Department of Education grant (Opening the Door to Algebra) investigating fraction knowledge's causal relationship to algebra learning outcomes, highlighting her commitment to evidence-based educational improvement through rigorous empirical research.
