Kristian Petersen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies at Old Dominion University. His research and publications focus on Islamic studies, particularly the intersection of Islam in China, media representations, and religious pedagogy. He authored the book Interpreting Islam in China: Pilgrimage, Scripture, and Language in the Han Kitab (Oxford University Press, 2017) and is currently working on a monograph titled The Cinematic Lives of Muslims. He also serves as the Design Architect and Curator of the Women of Islamic Studies project, a crowdsourced database highlighting women scholars in Islamic studies.
As an academic, Petersen engages in editorial work, including co-editing the forthcoming volumes Muslims in the Movies: A Global Anthology, New Approaches to Islam in Film, and Bloomsbury Handbook of Islam and Popular Culture. His pedagogical contributions include hosting the New Books in Religion and New Books in Islamic Studies podcasts, which extend scholarly discourse to broader audiences.
