Kristen Kozielski

Prof. Kristen Kozielski is an Assistant Professor of Neuroengineering Materials at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), holding a position in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and serving as Program Director for TUM's Elite Master’s Program in Neuroengineering. She leads the Neuroengineering Materials group, focusing on developing minimally invasive neurotechnologies using advanced materials. Her research integrates materials science, nanotechnology, and neurobiology to engineer wireless interfaces for neural communication and stimulation.

Dr. Kozielski earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and completed postdoctoral work at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. Before joining TUM in 2021, she was a group leader at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (2019–2021). Her career has been marked by prestigious awards, including grants from the Michael J. Fox Foundation and fellowships from the NIH and Whitaker International Program.

Her research emphasizes magnetoelectric nanoparticles for deep brain stimulation, bioreducible polymeric nanoparticles for cancer therapy, and novel methods for noninvasive neural interfacing. Her work bridges disciplines to address challenges in neuroengineering, such as improving drug delivery to the brain and designing smart materials for clinical applications.

Key achievements include demonstrating wireless deep brain stimulation in animal models and developing nanoparticle systems that target glioblastoma stem cells. Her publications span topics like neural stimulation modeling, endosomal pH regulation in cancer, and multiscale nanoparticle analysis. She collaborates across TUM’s School of Computation, Information, and Technology, fostering interdisciplinary innovation.

Prof. Kozielski actively mentors students and researchers, contributing to TUM’s training programs in neuroengineering. Her lab’s focus on translational research aims to bridge gaps between material science and clinical applications in neurology and oncology.
