Koreen Martfeld serves as the Academic Program Director for the Master of Counselling Program at City University in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. With over 25 years of experience in education and 16 years as a Registered Psychologist, she has been affiliated with City University since 2011, initially as associate faculty. In addition to teaching diverse courses including assessment, human sexuality, diversity, brief therapy, and practicum, she founded and directs the Edmonton Virtual Counselling Clinic since 2020.
Her educational background includes:
- Undergraduate degrees in Education and Psychology
- Master’s degree in Counselling
- Ph.D. in Psychology
Dr. Martfeld's research and clinical expertise centers on developmental trauma and disrupted attachment in youth. She has presented extensively on the impact of complex trauma on child development and parenting, integrating knowledge from clinical, counselling, educational, and forensic psychology. Her therapeutic approach emphasizes client-centered integration while addressing trauma treatment through specialized clinical practice.
As founder of the Edmonton Virtual Counselling Clinic, Dr. Martfeld oversees a critical training facility that provides community mental health services while serving as a practicum site for Master of Counselling students, bridging academic instruction with real-world clinical application across diverse populations including rural Alberta Métis and First Nations communities.
