Konuma Isabelle

Konuma Isabelle is a University Professor at the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO) specializing in Japanese studies. She serves as Vice President of Training (2023-present) and Member of the Scientific Council (2023-present), and will join the Board of Directors of the Cité du Genre in 2025. Her research is conducted through the French Institute for Research on East Asia (IFRAE).

Her primary research interests include Japanese law, gender studies, migration issues, population policies (particularly eugenics and demography), and the history of law since the Meiji period. Her work often examines the intersection of legal frameworks with social issues in Japanese society.

Professor Konuma's recent publications show a strong focus on statelessness, LGBTQ+ rights in Japan, eugenics history, reproductive policies, and multiculturalism. Her scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with both historical and contemporary legal issues in Japan, with particular attention to marginalized populations and social justice concerns.

She has supervised numerous doctoral students working on topics related to gender, migration, and Japanese law, reflecting her commitment to mentoring the next generation of scholars in these fields.

Among her notable administrative roles, she previously served as Head of the LLCER Master's in Japanese Studies (2019-2023), President of the CAPES in Japanese (2020-2022), and Gender equality officer at INALCO (2019-2022), demonstrating her leadership in both academic and gender equality initiatives.
