Konstantinos Chalkias

Konstantinos Chalkias is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Director of the PhD in Management at Birkbeck Business School, University of London. He holds a PhD in Business Development from the University of Surrey, an MSc in Programme and Project Management from Warwick University, and a BA in Management Science and Technology from Athens University of Economics and Business. His research focuses on Strategy as Practice (SaP), Paradox Theory, and Disaster Risk Financing, particularly exploring how governments and markets address the insurance protection gap exacerbated by climate change. He serves on the Thames Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (Defra) and is a member of Birkbeck’s Environment and Sustainability Research Centre.

His research interests include the interplay between insurance and physical resilience in flood-prone areas, global financial mechanisms for uninsured risks, and pandemic risk mitigation strategies. Key projects include studies funded by the ESRC, Bank of England, and UN, examining insurance systems in Switzerland and the UK’s Flood Re scheme. He has authored/co-authored books and articles on disaster insurance innovation and inter-organizational paradoxes in risk management.
