Kok-Chor Tan is a Professor and Chair of Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on political philosophy, global justice, ethics, and applied ethics with particular emphasis on climate justice, multiculturalism, and human rights. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (1998) and teaches courses on distributive justice, biomedical ethics, and comparative philosophy.
His notable works include What is This Thing Called Global Justice? (Routledge, 2017), Justice, Institutions, and Luck (Oxford UP, 2012), and Justice Without Borders (Cambridge UP, 2004). His recent scholarship addresses climate reparations, ethical vaccine distribution during pandemics, and decolonizing cosmopolitan frameworks. Tan's work bridges theoretical philosophy with practical applications in global governance and policy.
Key contributions include critiques of crisis nationalism, frameworks for just conservation policies, and relational accounts of toleration. His interdisciplinary approach integrates political theory, environmental ethics, and cross-cultural philosophy.
