Knut Marthinsen

Knut Marthinsen is a Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Faculty of Natural Sciences. He has held this position since 1998, with prior roles including Deputy Head of Department (2005–2009) and Acting Head of Department (2011). He earned his doctorate in materials physics from NTNU in 1986.

His research focuses on quantitative electron diffraction, microscopy-based materials characterization, and computational modeling of microstructure evolution in alloys, particularly aluminium. Key areas include thermomechanical processing, precipitation, recrystallization, and texture development. He has contributed to crystal plasticity models for metals and alloys, studying phenomena like the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect and Bauschinger effect.
