Dr. Knut Lange is an Associate Professor in Strategy and International Business at the Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham, where he joined in August 2023. His research spans international business, strategy, and institutional theory, with a strong focus on SME internationalisation, family businesses, entrepreneurship education, innovation, and the blue economy—particularly the seaweed industry and its role in advancing UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water).

He employs qualitative methodologies and welcomes PhD students in areas such as SME internationalisation, family business dynamics, and the intersection of sustainability and international business.
The most recent publications reflect a consistent focus on institutional theory, internationalisation support mechanisms, family business governance, and entrepreneurship education. His work frequently examines the interplay between national institutions and firm-level strategies, particularly in European and Chinese contexts, and explores how cultural and structural factors shape entrepreneurial behaviour and innovation.
Dr. Lange has held prior academic roles at Royal Holloway University of London, the University of Surrey, and research fellowships at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies. He is affiliated with the Blue Economy Research Lab at Brunel University London and the Social and Sustainable Enterprise Cluster at the Open University. He also serves as an External Examiner at King’s Business School, King’s College London.
He teaches the MSc modules 'Disruptive Innovation and International Business' in both Edgbaston and Singapore. His research is supported by collaborative networks and has been published in leading journals such as British Journal of Management, International Business Review, and Entrepreneurship Education and Pedagogy.
