Prof. Klaus H. Kästner is a full Professor and holder of the Suor Butterworth Chair of Genetics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He is also a Hans Fischer Senior Fellow at the TUM Institute for Advanced Study since 2015. His research focuses on pancreatic β-cell biology, epigenetic regulation of diabetes, and transcriptional control of organ development. Key achievements include pioneering functional genomics tools for the endocrine pancreas and identifying microRNA dysregulation in diabetic islets.
Education: PhD in Biochemistry from Johns Hopkins University (1990), postdoctoral training at the German Cancer Research Center. Awards include the NIH MERIT Award (2012) and Stanley N. Cohen Biomedical Research Award (2011). He serves on editorial boards of Diabetes and Molecular Endocrinology.
Research interests span β-cell mass expansion, FoxA transcription factors in organogenesis, and sex dimorphism in liver cancer. Over 250 publications highlight contributions to diabetes genetics and developmental biology. His work bridges functional genomics with clinical applications in type 1 and type 2 diabetes therapy.
