Professor Klaus Gerwert serves as Chair of Biophysics at Ruhr University Bochum within the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms using advanced spectroscopic techniques.
His research interests span multiple areas of biophysics with emphasis on molecular reaction mechanisms, membrane protein dynamics, and spectroscopic methodology development. Dr. Gerwert has established himself as a leading researcher in time-resolved FTIR spectroscopy applications for studying protein function.
His work demonstrates significant trends in investigating GTP- and ATP-dependent membrane processes, proton transport mechanisms, and optogenetic applications. The research consistently applies FTIR spectroscopy to understand molecular-level protein functions across various biological systems.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gerwert has led numerous significant research initiatives including Collaborative Research Centers, Priority Programs, and Graduate Schools that have advanced understanding in biophysical mechanisms.
As Principal Investigator, he has secured substantial research funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for projects examining molecular reaction mechanisms of G proteins, bacteriorhodopsin, photosynthetic reaction centers, and channelrhodopsins. His leadership extends to equipment development projects like the Quantum cascade laser-assisted IR microscope.
