Klaartje Peters is a 0.2 fte Professor of Local and Regional Governance at Maastricht University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She holds a Special Chair in Local and Regional Governance while maintaining roles as an independent researcher, writer, and trainer for civil servants and politicians. Her research focuses on political decision-making at national and subnational levels, scrutiny mechanisms in local government, intermunicipal cooperation, and regional governance reform.
Education: MSc in Public Administration from Leiden University, PhD in Political Science from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (1999, awarded the Dutch Political Science Association Dissertation Award).
Research interests emphasize democratic accountability, councillor roles, governance legitimacy, and institutional dynamics. Recent work explores council scrutiny systems, regional policy frameworks, and mayoral authority within legal structures. Her 2025 publications analyze municipal oversight mechanisms and regional political dynamics in the Netherlands.
