Kjetil Loftsgarden is an Associate Professor in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Oslo's Faculty of Humanities, specializing in Cultural Heritage Management. His research focuses on the Late Iron Age through Early Middle Ages in Scandinavia, with particular expertise in iron production, trade networks, and the impacts of climate change on ancient societies.
Loftsgarden's educational background includes a doctoral thesis from the University of Bergen (2017) titled 'Marknadsplassar omkring Hardangervidda – ein arkeologisk og historisk analyse av innlandets økonomi og nettverk i vikingtid og mellomalder' (Marketplaces around Hardangervidda – an archaeological and historical analysis of the inland economy and networks in the Viking Age and Middle Ages).
His research employs large-scale archaeological data to develop spatial and statistical analyses, examining how environmental changes affected population dynamics, settlement patterns, and social structures. Recent work has focused on volcanic eruptions of 536/540 CE and their societal impacts, as well as extensive trade networks between inland and coastal regions of Norway.
The analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals consistent focus on interdisciplinary approaches combining archaeology with climate science, statistical modeling, and landscape analysis. His work frequently examines the relationship between environmental changes and societal transformations, particularly regarding population dynamics, resource exploitation, and trade networks during Scandinavia's formative historical periods.
