Professor Kjetil Klette Bøhler is a musicologist at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), Faculty of Humanities, Sports and Educational Sciences, Department of Aesthetic Studies. He holds an MA (2008) and PhD (2013) in interdisciplinary musicology from the University of Oslo, with complementary expertise in sociology and anthropology.
His research focuses on the relationship between the aesthetic and the political, particularly in relation to music and politics. He has conducted extensive research in Norway, Cuba, and Brazil, examining how music functions in political contexts including presidential elections and social movements. Bøhler has produced six documentary films related to his research on music in Brazilian politics, particularly focusing on the Lula-Bolsonaro political divide.
Bøhler's work spans musicology, cultural theory, and political science, with particular attention to groove and rhythm research, music aesthetics, and the political power of music. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (2011), University of Texas, Austin (2011-12, 2019), University of Campinas, Brazil (2016-17, 2018, 2022), and University of Havana, Cuba (2010, 2015, 2018).
He previously worked for seven years as Researcher 1 at NOVA: Norwegian Social Research, OsloMet, with a focus on citizenship, cultural policy, and inclusion/exclusion, and was involved in EU projects DISCIT and NEGOTIATE. Bøhler has received research grants from the Research Council of Norway, Fulbright, and the Arts Council of Norway.
As an active public intellectual, he has conducted over 50 interviews on national radio and written numerous columns in Norwegian and international newspapers. Bøhler is also a performing jazz pianist specializing in Latin music, particularly Cuban and Brazilian styles.

Bøhler teaches courses on music research, cultural theory, and aesthetic studies, and supervises Master's and PhD students in music, cultural studies, and social science disciplines. His research bridges academic scholarship with practical cultural policy applications, particularly examining how music functions as a political tool in both domestic and international contexts.
