Kjell Ericson is an Assistant Professor of History of Science at Kyoto University and a Faculty Fellow. His research examines the intersection of science, technology, and empire-building through the lens of pearl cultivation in the 20th century.
- Advisers: Sheldon Garon, Benjamin Elman
Ericson’s work investigates how Japanese pearl cultivation transformed global distinctions between nature and culture, tracing legal, ecological, and economic conflicts over marine resources and gemological standards. His dissertation focuses on Mikimoto Kōkichi, the "Pearl King," and the transnational impacts of pearl cultivation in Japan, Europe, and the United States.
The study highlights legal battles over ownership of pearl oysters, ecological disruptions from monoculture practices, and shifting market dynamics during the Great Depression. It also critiques the historiography of Persian Gulf pearl economies in light of Japanese industrialization.
