Kiyomi Yamada is a Lecturer in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of New England (UNE). She holds a BA from Keio University, a Graduate Diploma in Education and MEd from UNE, and a PhD in Japanese applied linguistics from Monash University. Her research focuses on first and second language socialisation, second language acquisition, and discourse analysis, with particular attention to academic writing and supervisory practices in Japanese and international educational contexts.
Yamada has developed and taught Japanese language and cultural studies courses, coordinated UNE's exchange programs with Japanese universities (Daito Bunka, Kanazawa, Chubu, Doshisha, and Kagoshima), and supervised international PhD candidates. Her work bridges applied linguistics and educational practices, emphasizing cross-cultural communication and academic discourse socialisation. She has published extensively on undergraduate thesis writing, supervisory interactions, and genre analysis in Japanese and Australian educational settings.
