Dr. Kirsty Shaw is a Senior Lecturer in Forensic Biology at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her research focuses on molecular biology, microfluidic systems, forensic DNA analysis, and conservation genetics. She leads projects such as BloomSafe (NERC), shark species identification (Save Our Seas Foundation), and amino acid dating (NERC).
She teaches forensic biology and microfluidics, and supervises PhD students in conservation and environmental diagnostics. Her education includes a PhD in Chemistry (University of Hull), MSc in Forensic Science (King's College London), and BSc in Biochemistry (Imperial College London).
Her research integrates Lab-on-a-Chip technology for field applications, spanning forensic science, disease detection, and ecological conservation. Recent articles emphasize portable diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and interdisciplinary approaches to biodiversity challenges. Awards include Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and accreditation assessor roles for the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences.
- Grants: NERC BloomSafe, Save Our Seas Shark ID, National Geographic Explorer Grant
- Lab/Team: Collaborates with international partners in Ecuador for conservation technology deployment.
