Kirk Overmyer is a Professor and Principle Investigator at the University of Helsinki, leading the Plant-Fungal Interactions Group within the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Research Program at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on plant-microbe interactions, reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling, and molecular mechanisms of plant cell death regulation.
- Plant Physiology and Plant Molecular Biology Docent (University of Helsinki, 2012)
- PhD in Plant Genetics (University of Helsinki)
- MSc in Plant Environmental Biology (University of Eastern Finland)
- BSc in General Biology (University of Michigan)
With over 53 publications and leadership roles in major research projects like the Viikki Plant Science Centre (2015-present) and Academy of Finland National Centre of Excellence (2014-2019), he explores fungal pathogenesis, plant immunity, and stress adaptation. His recent work includes Taphrina-plant interactions, ROS-regulated signaling, and genome sequencing of economically important fungi.
Overmyer has reviewed 92 manuscripts for journals like Plant Physiology and Biochemistry and Plant Cell Reports, served on the editorial board of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry since 2009, and mentors PhD and MSc students. He received the Academy Fellow award from the Academy of Finland (2011-2016) and participates in organizing international symposia like Engineered Plant Immunity.
