E. Tapio Palva is Professor and active doctoral-programme supervisor at the University of Helsinki, Finland. He is based at the Viikki campus (Biocenter 2) and has been a Principal Investigator in major national consortia including ViPS (Viikki Plant Science Centre), NaPPI (National Plant Phenotyping Infrastructure) and VMPS (Viikki Molecular Plant Sciences).
His research spans genetics, developmental biology, plant physiology, microbiology and virology, with a long-standing focus on plant–environment interactions and stress signaling.
Professor Palva has published more than 125 peer-reviewed articles since 1976, with steady output up to 2023. Recent work addresses cold-stress signal transduction, hormonal control of immunity, WRKY transcription-factor networks, bacterial plant pathogens, and the genomics of adaptive traits in forest trees. These themes collectively advance our understanding of how plants perceive and respond to abiotic and biotic stresses at molecular and systems levels.
Since 2010 he has served as Director/Supervisor for doctoral theses and he is a frequent opponent and examiner of PhD dissertations. He has also chaired major international conferences such as the 9th International Plant Cold Hardiness Seminar (2011) and participates actively in peer review and scientific committees.
Professor Palva leads or co-leads collaborative teams that integrate molecular biology, genomics and bioinformatics to dissect stress-response pathways and enhance crop and forest resilience.
