Smith’s research focuses on the lived experiences of children in Canadian asylums (1880–1930), using archival materials and creative writing to challenge the medical model of madness. She is funded by SSHRC in honor of Nelson Mandela and has authored a novella, The Red Chair, derived from her M.A. research.
Her publications explore intersections of Canadian history, disability rights, and literary experimentation, with a focus on health and well-being and historical imagination. While no direct student or award details are listed, her work highlights marginalized narratives through digital humanities and arts-based interpretations.
