Julia Smith is an Associate Professor in the Labour Studies Program at the University of Manitoba, located on Treaty 1 territory and the homeland of the Métis Nation. Her research focuses on the history and politics of work, unions, labour relations, and feminist activism in Canada. She is affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and the Graphic History Collective. Smith holds a PhD in Canadian Studies from Trent University, an MA in History from Simon Fraser University, and a BA in History and Labour Studies from Simon Fraser University.
Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, blending historical analysis with contemporary issues such as menstrual justice and equity in public infrastructure. A recent study co-led by Smith highlighted systemic barriers to menstrual equity on university campuses, including inadequate washroom facilities and stigma surrounding menstruation. She has received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
Smith’s scholarship spans topics like gendered work experiences in the airline industry, 1970s labour movements, and the intersection of child care policies with worker rights. She actively collaborates with institutions like the Centre for Human Rights Research, advocating for policies that prioritize dignity and equity in workplaces and educational settings.
