Kingstedt

Prof. Kingstedt leads the High Strain-Rate Mechanics of Materials Lab at the University of Utah, focusing on deformation and failure mechanisms in materials under extreme conditions. His research integrates advanced diagnostics with experimental techniques to develop lightweight structural materials for aerospace, automotive, and defense sectors. He collaborates with Utah State University (USU) on a $776k DOE-NEUP grant investigating microscale ductility measurements. Current students include PhD candidate Mohammed Elamin (studying cryogenic composite panels) and MS student Jack Varga (dynamic tensile behavior of additive metals). Undergraduates Ronaldo Herrera and Tanner Snow are supported by UROP grants for x-ray tomography analysis and bone material dynamics research.

Research interests span thermomechanical coupling, interface structure effects, and additive manufacturing. Notable projects include studying magnesium alloy AZ31B deformation mechanisms and evaluating interface structures in AgCu eutectic alloys. Prof. Kingstedt has presented at conferences like SEM 2018 and published extensively on topics like plastic work-to-heat conversion and microstructural tailoring. His lab employs novel techniques such as integrated-heating load frames and high-speed imaging for material characterization.
