Kimberly Shaw is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences and a Faculty Fellow in the Honors College at Columbus State University. She holds a Ph.D. in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics from Florida State University and has a dual B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from Vanderbilt University.
Her research focuses on Physics Education Research (PER), particularly how students effectively learn physics. Key areas include gender and equity in STEM, assessment of student learning in introductory courses, problem-solving strategies, development of self-efficacy in physics, and measurement of scientific reasoning abilities. She has conducted site visits to evaluate female-friendly environments in undergraduate institutions as part of an NSF-funded project.
Dr. Shaw is recognized nationally for her contributions to STEM education, with her work cited in influential books such as Minding Bodies by Susan Hrach and How Humans Learn by Josh Eyler. She has led the development of free online materials for introductory physics through the Affordable Learning Georgia Grant and co-led the establishment of the UTeach Columbus program.
