Dr. Brian Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). He has been actively involved with the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering’s Whitaker Center for STEM Education since his arrival at FGCU, serving on its Leadership Team and later as Interim Director from Fall 2019 to Fall 2021. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a B.S. with honors in Mathematics from North Dakota State University.
Dr. Johnson’s research focuses on Commutative Algebra, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Mathematics, and Faculty Professional Development. He has directed student research projects in areas such as zero-divisor graphs of graded rings, hyperbolic geometry, and jigsaw sudoku puzzles, some of which have led to publications in journals like Involve and MAA’s The College Mathematics Journal. His teaching emphasizes active learning pedagogies in Abstract Algebra (undergraduate and graduate levels) and mathematics for non-STEM majors.
