Dr. Kimberly Paul is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Clemson University and founding member of the Eukaryotic Pathogens Innovation Center (EPIC). Her NIH-funded research examines fatty acid metabolism in trypanosomes – parasites causing African sleeping sickness and other neglected tropical diseases.
Research Focus: Investigates how trypanosomes acquire, synthesize, and utilize fatty acids to evade host immunity and adapt to different host environments. Current projects analyze lipid droplet formation, environmental regulation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, and myristate utilization in VSG anchoring.
Teaching: Develops courses on parasite biochemistry including 'Biochemistry of Metabolism' and 'HIV: Plague of the 20th Century', mentoring undergraduate research through Creative Inquiry projects on lipid biology.
