Kimberly Monk is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of History at Brock University's Faculty of Humanities. She holds a Ph.D. in Maritime Archaeology from the University of Bristol, an M.A. in Maritime History & Nautical Archaeology from East Carolina University, and a B.A. in Anthropology from Western University. Her research focuses on maritime cultural landscapes, historical archaeology of the Great Lakes region, and critical dendroprovenancing methodologies. Dr. Monk has published on topics ranging from shipyard preservation to colonial maritime legacies, and she actively collaborates with museums and archaeological organizations to advance interdisciplinary research.
Her recent work includes co-authoring Understanding the Historic Legacies of Empire (2023) which explores timber analysis in British North Atlantic contexts, and Launching New Life into Old Shipyards (2021) addressing historic industrial preservation. Monk has organized numerous conferences/workshops including the 2023 Canadian Historical Association session on digital archaeological methods and recurring Ontario Archaeological Society symposia on maritime archaeology partnerships.
Dr. Monk teaches courses such as HIST 2F00 (Great Lakes Maritime History) and HIST/CLAS 3M60 (Field School in Local Historical Archaeology), emphasizing hands-on fieldwork and community-based research. Her professional activities include advising Save Ontario Shipwrecks initiatives and fostering museum-university collaborations to manage Ontario's maritime heritage resources.
