Kimberly K. Cleary, PT, PhD, is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Physical Therapy at Eastern Washington University (EWU). Her expertise includes postoperative rehabilitation, biomechanics of movement, and clinical outcomes in geriatric and cardiac patient populations. She leads research on sternal precautions after cardiac surgery, falls prevention in older adults, and exercise adherence in chronic disease recovery.
Dr. Cleary’s research focuses on optimizing recovery pathways for patients undergoing major surgeries, particularly those involving sternotomy. Her work combines biomechanical analysis with clinical interventions to improve patient compliance with precautions and reduce complications. Recent studies emphasize feedback training systems to enhance functional mobility and muscle recruitment patterns. She also investigates health-related quality of life metrics in predicting falls risk among elderly populations.
Her portfolio includes over 40 peer-reviewed articles since 2000, with contributions to cardiac rehabilitation protocols, restraint use in healthcare settings, and interdisciplinary collaboration in physical therapy education. Notable projects include developing novel approaches to cardiac rehabilitation programs and evaluating the efficacy of the Nintendo Wii™ for balance training in skilled nursing facilities.
Dr. Cleary holds adjunct roles in clinical practice and serves as a medical malpractice expert witness. Her teaching and clinical leadership at EWU’s Health Science & Public Health college emphasize evidence-based practice and interprofessional education. While no formal grants or labs are explicitly listed, her research consistently addresses translational clinical challenges in rehabilitation science.
