Kimberly Cox is a faculty member in the Department of Biology at Randolph-Macon College. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Virginia (2012), an MSc in Neuroscience from the University of Texas at Austin (2005), and a BS in Biology from the University of Virginia (2003). Her research expertise lies in circadian rhythms, reproductive neuroendocrinology, and human genetics, with extensive post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital and UT Southwestern Medical Center.
Education:
- PhD, Neuroscience, University of Virginia (2012)
- MSc, Neuroscience, University of Texas at Austin (2005)
- BS, Biology, University of Virginia (2003)
Research Interests: Kimberly Cox's work bridges molecular neuroscience and systems biology, focusing on circadian clock mechanisms and their role in behavior and metabolism. Her studies explore how genetic mutations affect sleep-wake cycles, reproductive endocrinology, and metabolic disorders. She employs mouse models and cellular imaging to dissect transcriptional networks in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and hypothalamus.
Her recent publications highlight epigenetic inheritance of circadian rhythms, noise-driven cellular heterogeneity, and metabolic ultradian oscillations, contributing to both basic science and translational research in sleep disorders and endocrine diseases.
Awards:
- Poster Award, MGH Center for Human Genetics Research (2015)
Teaching & Mentorship: Kimberly Cox teaches a wide range of biology courses at RMC, including Human Anatomy and Physiology, Neurogenetics & Behavior, and Guided Research. She actively mentors undergraduate students through BIOL 271/371/493/494 Research in Biology and BIOL 450 Internship in Biology, fostering hands-on learning in neuroscience and molecular biology.
Laboratory & Collaborations: While her primary affiliation is with RMC, her research leverages collaborations with institutions like Harvard Medical School and UT Southwestern, integrating cutting-edge techniques in genetics, imaging, and behavioral analysis.
