Kimberley Johnson is Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University and an Affiliate Faculty Member of the Wagner School. Her research focuses on American political development, urban politics, and race and ethnic politics.
Johnson's expertise spans American Political Development, Urban and Local Politics, Race and Ethnic Politics, and African American Urban and Suburban Politics. She is the author of two influential books: Reforming Jim Crow (2010) and Governing the American State (2007), examining administrative reforms in the Jim Crow South and state government evolution. Her current research explores Black power urbanism through a manuscript titled Dark Concrete, analyzing political movements in Newark, East Orange, Oakland, and East Palo Alto.
