Marcus Johnson

Marcus Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). His research focuses on racial disparities in political behavior, particularly examining how historical and contemporary racial inequality impacts the political engagement of people of African descent in Latin America. He holds a PhD from Princeton University (2017) and a BA from UMD (2011). Prior to his current role, he served as a President's Postdoctoral Fellow at UMD (2017-2018).

Teaching is central to his work, emphasizing student choice, empathy, and diversity as pedagogical tools. He teaches courses such as Comparative Politics and Race and Ethnic Politics in Comparative Perspective. His academic journey includes mentorship from UMD faculty, which he credits as foundational to his success. He maintains an office in Chincoteague 3117F and holds regular office hours.

Johnson’s scholarly interests bridge race, political behavior, and Latin American studies, with a commitment to fostering inclusive educational environments.
