Dr. Kimberley Catania serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy & Developmental Biology within Monash University's School of Biomedicine and Victorian Heart Institute (VHI). Previously teaching at Deakin and RMIT Universities during her doctoral studies, she now focuses on biomedical education innovation.
Her academic foundation includes a Doctorate in Molecular Biology of Skeletal Muscle from Deakin University, reflecting her early research specialization.
Dr. Catania's research centers on optimizing educational methodologies in biomedical sciences, particularly through teamwork assessment frameworks and student engagement strategies. Her Monash Education Academy-funded projects have revolutionized anatomy pedagogy via pass/fail lab competencies and large-scale viva voce examinations, directly enhancing the Structure of the Human Body curriculum.
Recent publications demonstrate a decisive shift from molecular biology toward educational scholarship, with 2024 works establishing her leadership in assessment innovation for anatomy education.
Her teaching excellence has been recognized through prestigious awards:
- Biomedical Science Teaching Award (2018)
- Monash University, BDI Innovation in Learning and Teaching Award (2020)
Funded by the Monash Education Academy, her current research actively transforms assessment practices while her conference presentations at the Monash Education Academy Learning and Teaching Conference (2018) and European Muscle Conference (2014) showcase dual expertise in education and muscle physiology.
Through her Victorian Heart Institute affiliation, Dr. Catania integrates cardiovascular research contexts into anatomy education while leading curriculum development for biomedical sciences at Monash.
