Kim Verwaayen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Western University. She holds MA and PhD degrees, though their institutions are unspecified. Her research focuses on feminist theory, postmodern/poststructuralist/postcolonial feminisms, women's life-writing, and trauma studies, with a strong emphasis on Canadian and Indigenous women's literature. She has been recognized for both research (Carl F. and Margaret E. Klinck Prize, 2005) and teaching (Marilyn Robinson Award, 2009).
Her work explores intersections of gender, representation, and narrative forms, including analyses of Margaret Atwood, Anne Michaels, and Nicole Brossard. She co-edits an anthology on Indigenous representation and has presented at international conferences on topics like trauma in literature and Indigenous land rights. She actively contributes to feminist pedagogy and interdisciplinary collaborations through edited collections and academic service.
Verwaayen emphasizes her deep connection to Western University’s Gender Studies department, valuing the engaged student community across undergraduate and graduate programs. Her scholarship bridges literary analysis with critical social theory, addressing urgent questions of colonialism, memory, and ethical responsibility in cultural production.
