Kim Theriault, PhD, is a part-time Professor of Art at the University of Southern Maine (USM) and Professor Emerita of Modernist and Contemporary Art History at Dominican University in Illinois. She holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Virginia, with expertise in theory, criticism, and themes like displacement, trauma, memory, and identity. Her work explores how art engages with cultural and personal histories.
Dr. Theriault’s education includes a PhD from the University of Virginia, an MA in Art & Architectural History from SUNY Buffalo, a Diploma in Art History & Museum Studies from the University of New Hampshire, and a BA in Art from The American University.
Her research focuses on interpreting trauma, memory, and identity through art, particularly in her book Rethinking Arshile Gorky and contributions to exhibitions like the Arshile Gorky: A Retrospective catalog. She is currently writing a book on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial’s impact on American culture and conscience. Dr. Theriault has spoken at prestigious institutions such as the Library of Congress, National Gallery of Art, and Oxford University, and organized sessions at professional conferences like the College Art Association Annual Conference in 2016.
She has advised students, directed undergraduate theses, and taught at institutions like the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her teaching portfolio includes courses in Museum Studies, Modern Art, Contemporary Art, and specialized topics like Abstract Expressionism. She also contributed to scoring AP Art History Exams for over a decade and served on non-profit advisory boards and museum committees.
