Kim Rygiel is an Associate Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University, affiliated with the Department of Political Science, School of International Policy and Governance, and Balsillie School of International Affairs. She co-directs the International Migration Research Centre and serves as co-chief editor of Citizenship Studies.

Rygiel’s research focuses on citizenship politics, migration, and asylum, particularly how grassroots initiatives challenge xenophobia and foster cultural pluralism. Her work examines transgressive cosmopolitanism in refugee-host community interactions and the role of arts in promoting inclusive citizenship.
Her SSHRC-funded project, Living with Others: Fostering Cultural Pluralism Through Citizenship Politics, explores practices of everyday cosmopolitanism in Europe. Key outputs include a peer-reviewed article in Ethics & Global Politics (2017) and reports for the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (2018).
Rygiel has supervised or collaborated with research assistants such as Diana Thomaz (PhD candidate), Rhys Machold (PhD graduate), and Master’s students James Howard and Rachel Weiss. She co-organized workshops on migration and refugee policy at institutions like Humboldt University and the Mercator Centre.
