Kim M. Gans, PhD, MPH is a Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences at the University of Connecticut. She is also affiliated with the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy. Dr. Gans leads multiple research initiatives focused on community-based interventions to improve eating habits, increase physical activity, and prevent/control obesity among diverse populations.
Dr. Gans received her educational training from prestigious institutions:
- B.S. in Biology from Duke University (1983)
- M.P.H. in Nutrition from the University of North Carolina (1985)
- Ph.D. in Biological Sciences (Nutrition) from the University of Rhode Island (1992)
Dr. Gans' research program focuses on innovative health communication technologies to change behavior and interventions to improve home, work, and neighborhood environments to enhance obesity prevention. Her work strongly emphasizes community-engaged research with low-income and ethnic minority populations. She has developed numerous interventions across various settings including worksites, subsidized housing sites, assisted living communities, and family child care homes. Her research interests span healthy eating/nutrition, obesity prevention and treatment, physical activity, translational research, health literacy, and food environments/access.
Analysis of Dr. Gans' recent publications reveals a strong focus on digital health interventions, childhood nutrition and obesity prevention, and community-based approaches to improving health outcomes. Her work increasingly incorporates technology to enhance intervention reach and effectiveness, particularly in underserved populations. There is a clear trend toward multi-level interventions that address both individual behavior change and environmental modifications to support healthier choices.
Dr. Gans has secured substantial research funding from major organizations including:
- National Cancer Institute (NCI) for mobile produce market studies
- National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
- Tufts Health Foundation for older adult nutrition
- Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for physical activity training
- National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for family child care home interventions
- National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) for community-based participatory research
Dr. Gans leads several active research projects and collaborates extensively with community partners. Her work with the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy demonstrates her commitment to translating research into practice. She has developed the "Food on the Move" initiative to translate mobile produce market trials into sustained public health programs, showing her dedication to real-world implementation of effective interventions.
