Kieran Germaine

Dr. Kieran Germaine is a Lecturer in the Department of Applied Sciences at South East Technological University, affiliated with the enviroCORE research group. His expertise lies in environmental microbiology, focusing on bioremediation and soil health. He holds a PhD from Institute of Technology Carlow (2007) and a BSc in Industrial Biology (2000). Dr. Germaine teaches courses in Fundamental Biology, Environmental Science, and Environmental Management. His research addresses soil pollution remediation using bacteria, fungi, and plants, microplastic impacts on ecosystems, and bio-based solutions for agriculture. He has consulted for industry on biofertilizer and bioremediation products and serves as Chair of the Microbiology Society of UK and Ireland.

His work spans collaboration with institutions in Alaska, Hawaii, and other regions, with datasets on microbiomes of polluted soils and microbial genomes. Research outputs include studies on hydrocarbon remediation, microplastic toxicity, and bio-based materials innovation.
