Ki Wook Kim is a Research Fellow at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) in the School of Clinical Medicine (Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health) within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. He is based at the UNSW-affiliated Virology Research Laboratory at Prince of Wales Hospital and co-leads the Virology theme in the Environmental Determinants of Islet Autoimmunity (ENDIA) Study, a longitudinal cohort tracking 1,500 mother-infant pairs in Australia.
- Education: PhD in Molecular Biology & Genetics (University of Sydney), BSc (Hons I) in Molecular Biology & Genetics, Graduate Certificate in Bioinformatics (Harvard University)
His research focuses on viral causes of type 1 diabetes, particularly enteroviruses and human viromics. He employs Next-Generation Sequencing to explore transcriptomic and viromic changes in pancreatic islets and investigates microRNA dysregulation in autoimmune pathways. His work spans virology, pediatrics, and molecular epidemiology.
Dr. Kim's recent publications highlight trends in respiratory infections, SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and dengue virology, with a strong emphasis on type 1 diabetes pathogenesis and environmental triggers. He has contributed to meta-analyses linking enteroviruses to islet autoimmunity and studies on virome dynamics in infants.
- Honors:
- Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) International Postdoctoral Research Fellow
He supervises PhD and Medical Honours students and serves as a guest lecturer for MICR3061 (Virology and Molecular Biology). Dr. Kim actively participates in UNSW's Medicine Early Career Academic Network and Elevate Program, supporting academic development.
