Professor Anandwardhan A Hardikar is a leading diabetes researcher based at Western Sydney University's School of Medicine, holding a JDRF Australia Clinical Research Network Fellowship. He directs the Diabetes and Islet Biology Group and serves as Visiting Professor with the Danish Diabetes Academy and Vice President of Islet Society, Sweden.
His research spans three interconnected domains:
- Islet Cell Biology: Investigating molecular diversity in naturally occurring insulin-producing cells using human pancreatic islets and cadaveric tissues
- Epigenetics: Deciphering regulatory mechanisms in insulin gene expression through ncRNA studies and multigeneration undernutrition models
- Biomarker Discovery: Validating microRNA signatures and insulin cfDNA for Type 1 diabetes progression across 2,000+ ethnically diverse clinical samples
Key awards include the ARC Future Fellowship (2012) and JDRF CRN Fellowship. His lab collaborates with 101 groups across 14+ countries, maintaining active partnerships with 98% of past collaborators. The research leverages PC2 facilities at Campbelltown campus, with core themes led by Mugdha Joglekar (Regulatory RNAs) and Wilson Wong (lncRNAs analytics).
Prospective students may submit interest via the lab portal, with PhD opportunities periodically advertised. The group acknowledges traditional custodianship of Darug, Eora, Dharawal, and Wiradjuri peoples over its research lands.
