Professor Khorshed Alam holds a position in the School of Business at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), specializing in Economics. He is a founding member and leader of the Health Economics Research group within the Centre for Health Research at UniSQ, and also serves on the Executive Group of this Centre. His roles include former Head of Economics Discipline, School Research Coordinator, and Associate Director of the Australian Centre for Sustainable Business and Development. He has been involved with the Australia and New Zealand Regional Science Association since 2018 and co-edited the Australasian Journal of Regional Studies.
Education: He earned a BSc(Hons) and MSc from Jahangirnagar University (Bangladesh), an MA in Economics from the Institute of Social Studies (Erasmus University, Netherlands), and a PhD in Economics from Murdoch University (Australia).
Research focuses on socio-economic determinants of health, particularly in disadvantaged populations, digital health innovations for chronic disease management among Indigenous Australians, and sustainability topics like circular economy and carbon footprint reduction strategies. He employs economic evaluation, cost-benefit analysis, and climate adaptation methodologies. His work has secured ≈$6 million in external grants, including two NHMRC-MRFF projects totaling $1.5 million.
Professor Alam has an extensive publication record (over 200 articles, 70% in Q1 SJR journals) with a Google Scholar H-index of 52 (12,000+ citations) and Scopus H-index of 44 (7,500+ citations). His research emphasizes evidence-based public health policy and Indigenous-led healthcare models in rural regions.
He has supervised 24 Higher Degree Research (HDR) students to completion and currently advises 12 PhD candidates. He actively mentors junior academics and mid-career researchers. His teaching includes courses on Sustainable Economies and Economics of Climate Change.
