Kevin Parthenay serves as Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Tours and maintains dual research affiliations with the Political Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean (OPALC) and the Interdisciplinary Legal Research Institute (IRJI). His institutional footprint extends to Sciences Po, where he has taught since 2010—primarily at the Poitiers Campus—and previously held leadership roles as Head of Teaching and Deputy Director (2013–2019). Current editorial commitments include co-directing the Latin America and Caribbean section of the French Yearbook of International Relations (AFRI) since 2019 and serving on the editorial board of Contemporary Politics. In December 2021, he expanded his strategic research scope through an associate researcher position at the Institute for Strategic Research of the Military Academy (IRSEM) under France’s Ministry of the Armed Forces.
His research program systematically interrogates three interconnected domains: the political sociology of regional integration across Latin America, Asia, and Africa; the formulation and execution of Latin American and Caribbean foreign policies; and multidimensional assessments of democratic quality within Latin American contexts. This tripartite framework positions him at the nexus of comparative politics and international relations theory, with particular emphasis on Global South dynamics.
Recent scholarly output reveals consistent thematic continuity, exemplified by his 2020 analysis of Latin American political crises (Crises in Latin America: Uprooted Democracies 2009-2019) and 2019 monograph on cross-regional institutional development (A Political Sociology of Regionalisms: Comparative Perspectives). These works collectively underscore his methodological commitment to comparative analysis while advancing empirical understanding of democratic resilience and regional governance structures.
Parthenay’s academic influence is amplified through his leadership in AFRI’s Latin America/Caribbean section and editorial stewardship of Contemporary Politics, facilitating scholarly discourse on hemispheric political evolution. His research ecosystem is anchored by strategic collaborations across OPALC, IRJI, and IRSEM—where his 2021 appointment signals growing engagement with security dimensions of international relations—creating synergies between theoretical political science and applied policy research.
