Maxwell Cameron is a Professor jointly appointed in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA) and Political Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He previously served as Director of the Centre for the Study of Democratic Institutions (CSDI) and Acting Director of SPPGA (2019-2020). His expertise spans comparative politics (Latin America), constitutionalism, democracy, and political economy.
Education: Ph.D., Political Science, University of California, Berkeley (1989).
Research Interests: Cameron focuses on democratic institutions, Latin American politics, and governance challenges. He has authored/co-edited over a dozen books, including Challenges to Democracy in the Andes and Political Institutions and Practical Wisdom. His work emphasizes institutional design, democratic resilience, and the interplay between political economy and governance.
Awards: Recipient of the 2022 Guillermo O’Donnell Democracy Award, UBC Killam Teaching Prize (2013), and Distinguished Fellow of the Canadian Association of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (2020).
Key Contributions: Founded the Andean Democracy Research Network and co-led the 'Global Challenges to Democracy' research cluster. His recent work addresses pandemic governance, democratic erosion in Latin America, and electoral integrity.
Grants & Funding: Secured support from SSHRC, IDRC, the Ford Foundation, and others for research on democracy and governance in the Andean region.
Labs/Teams: Co-organized the Institute for Future Legislators while leading CSDI, focusing on legislative training and institutional reform.
