Dr. Kevin Nadal is a Distinguished Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Graduate Center, CUNY. He holds a PhD in Counseling Psychology (Teachers College, Columbia University) and has authored over 100 works and 14 books on multicultural psychology, microaggressions, and LGBTQ+ issues. His research focuses on the mental health impacts of discrimination on marginalized groups, including people of color and LGBTQ+ communities. Nadal has held leadership roles in organizations such as the Asian American Psychological Association and the Filipino American National Historical Society. He co-founded the LGBTQ+ Scholars of Color National Network and the AAPA Divisions on Filipinx Americans and LGBTQQ+. His awards include the APA Early Career Award and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Thought Leadership Award.
Education: PhD (2008), MPhil (2007) from Teachers College, Columbia University; MA (2002) in Counseling from Michigan State University; BAs in Psychology and Political Science (2000) from UC Irvine.
Research Interests: Microaggressions, LGBTQ+ mental health, Filipino American psychology, forensic mental health counseling, and intersectional identities. His work bridges empirical research with social justice advocacy, addressing systemic oppression through policy and community initiatives.
Awards: APA Early Career Award (2017), Richard Tewksbury Award (2019), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Thought Leadership Award (2019), Teachers College Medal (2023). He has delivered lectures globally, including at the White House and U.S. Capitol.
Grants & Teams: Collaborates on projects addressing LGBTQ+ mental health and racial justice. Co-founded networks promoting LGBTQ+ scholars of color and Filipino American historical preservation. Active in policy advocacy and community education initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Involved in research teams focused on microaggressions, criminal justice reform, and culturally responsive counseling practices.
