Kevin McSweeney

Kevin McSweeney is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He serves as Director of the Arboretum, integrating research and outreach in environmental science. His work focuses on soil science, environmental restoration, and agricultural sustainability, with emphasis on soil carbon dynamics, land reclamation, and geologic processes.

Research interests include soil carbon stocks in tropical agroecosystems, digital soil mapping techniques, and the application of sediment science to remediate degraded landscapes. His interdisciplinary projects address challenges in coal mine restoration, sediment utilization, and sustainable agricultural practices.

McSweeney has contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including studies on soil-sediment interactions, coal gangue applications, and regional soil organic carbon modeling. His research often involves international collaborations, such as work in Guatemala and China, and spans geology, ecology, and engineering disciplines.
