Kevin Lau is a Lecturer in the Architecture and Water department at Luleå University of Technology, part of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering. With 15 years of experience in climate-sensitive urban planning and design, he specializes in the relationship between built environments and urban climate systems.
His primary research interests include urban climatology, focusing particularly on human thermal comfort in outdoor environments and the connections between the built environment, climate, and health and well-being. His work bridges scientific research with practical urban planning applications, translating complex climate data into actionable design guidance. He has served as principal investigator for numerous projects commissioned by government departments, NGOs, and private sector organizations.
Lau is currently an active member of the WMO Expert Network for the Commission for Observations, Infrastructure and Information Systems and the Commission for Weather, Climate, Water and Related Environmental Services and Applications. His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on climate resilience in building design, microclimate research methodologies, and the health impacts of urban climate conditions, particularly in high-density environments.
His research shows a consistent pattern of international collaboration, particularly with researchers in Hong Kong and other East and Southeast Asian high-density cities, examining how local climate zones affect thermal comfort and health outcomes. His work combines theoretical climate science with practical urban design applications, contributing to more climate-responsive built environments.
