Dr. Kevin Kelley is an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychology within the College of Arts and Sciences at Howard Payne University (HPU), where he has been a faculty member since August 2013. He is known for his high-energy teaching style and commitment to student engagement, particularly in courses on human diversity and statistics. He played a key role in establishing an industrial and organizational psychology track in the psychology program and is actively involved in student life, including dormitory mentoring and campus transition initiatives.
Dr. Kelley earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees from St. Louis University in Missouri, completing his doctoral studies in 2007. Prior to entering academia, he worked professionally with IBM and Apple, bringing real-world business experience into his classroom.
His research and teaching interests center on industrial-organizational psychology, human diversity, applied statistics, and the psychological development of college students. He emphasizes critical thinking, identity exploration, and grounding knowledge in personal, professional, and spiritual decision-making. His pedagogical approach focuses on meeting students where they are and supporting their holistic transition into adulthood and higher education.
Dr. Kelley is actively involved in mentoring students and improving experiential learning opportunities. He has expressed a goal to expand internship placements for senior psychology majors at HPU. He has participated in faculty panels such as “coffee talks” to support student adjustment to college life.
Outside of his academic duties, Dr. Kelley is a musician, playing bass in a local funk pop band called Zak & Nem. He is married to Lorianna Kelley, who also works at HPU, and they have a son, Nelson, who is enrolled in dual credit courses at the university. The family enjoys an active home life with two horses, two dogs, two cats, two goats, and a corn snake named Husker.
