Dr. Julie Welker is a faculty member in the School of Education and Fine Arts at Howard Payne University (HPU), where she serves as head of the Department of Communication. She has been on the faculty for 17 years and teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, including the core human communication class, upper-level communication courses, and classes in the MBA and Sport, Wellness, and Leadership programs.
She is deeply committed to student development, critical thinking, and strong work ethics in the classroom. Dr. Welker is also the coach of HPU’s award-winning speech and debate team, the Student Speaker Bureau, which highlights her dedication to student success beyond the classroom.
Her research interests include speech and debate practices, family communication, and faith communication. She has served on numerous university committees and was president of the Faculty Assembly for two years, demonstrating strong institutional leadership.
Dr. Welker earned her PhD from Regent University, a master’s degree in communication studies from Southwest Texas State University, and her bachelor’s from HPU in 1994. She is a fourth-generation educator and integrates her passion for teaching, faith, and communication into her academic life.
She is actively involved in advising and student engagement through teaching, coaching, and committee service. Her leadership roles include heading the Department of Communication and presiding over the Faculty Assembly.
Dr. Welker is also active in community and religious service, serving as an officer for the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and volunteering with the Christian Women’s Job Corps. She and her family are members of Early First Baptist Church, and she enjoys outdoor activities such as horseback riding, beekeeping, and working on their land.
