Kevin Johnson is an Associate Professor of Music and Chairman of the Department of Music at Spelman College, serving since 1999. He directs the Spelman College Glee Club and holds the position of Minister of Music at The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel in Fayetteville, Georgia.
His academic credentials include:

Dr. Johnson's research focuses on Choral Music, Sacred Music, and African American Music traditions. He is a prolific composer specializing in Catholic liturgical music, with seven mass settings, over 300 psalm settings, and extensive sacred song catalogs. His work explores the integration of African American musical expressions into Catholic worship, documented through workshops nationwide and publications like "Reap a Harvest in Due Season: A Treasury of African American Catholic Music".
His compositional output shows strong thematic trends in liturgical innovation and cultural synthesis, with commissions including "The Mass of St. Benedict the African" (Archdiocese of Chicago) and "The Mass of St. Peter Claver" (Knights of Peter Claver). The Spelman College Glee Club, under his direction, has performed internationally including at the White House for President Obama (2016) and Lisbon, Portugal (2019).
