James E. Bobb serves as Associate Professor of Music at St. Olaf College, holding the Elliot M. and Klara Stockdal Johnson Chair in Organ and Church Music within Christiansen Hall of Music. With over 20 years of professional experience directing church music in Lutheran and United Church of Christ congregations, he integrates practical liturgical expertise into his academic role.
His educational foundation includes undergraduate studies at Capital University (organ with Janet Linker, piano with Frank Hussey) followed by performer's certificates and Master of Music degrees in organ and harpsichord performance from the Eastman School of Music (studying organ under Russell Saunders and David Craighead, harpsichord with Arthur Haas).
Bobb's scholarly focus centers on historical keyboard performance practice, liturgical music composition, and choral direction within Christian traditions. He actively composes and improvises for worship following Lutheran cantorial traditions while directing the 96-voice Cantorei ensemble in major performances including the St. Olaf Christmas Festival.
