Kevin Fontaine is a Professor in the Department of Health Behavior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), School of Public Health, and holds the Antoine Lavoisier Endowed Professorship of Energetics and Healthy Lifestyles. He also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Johns Hopkins University. With over 30 years of experience, his research focuses on obesity-related lifestyle interventions, clinical trials, and chronic disease management. He has authored over 193 scholarly works and led numerous NIH-funded grants.
Fontaine holds leadership roles, including former Department Chairperson (2014–2024) and Vice Chairperson (2013–2014). He teaches courses in health behavior, obesity, and research methods. His affiliations include the Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC), O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education (COERE).
Research interests span caregiver support for delirium patients, dietary interventions (e.g., low-carbohydrate diets), and web-based interventions for cancer survivors. He emphasizes translational research addressing social determinants of health and metabolic therapies (e.g., ketone esters) in cystic fibrosis and obesity.
Fontaine’s work bridges clinical and public health domains, with a focus on scalable interventions for vulnerable populations. He collaborates across disciplines, including nutrition, oncology, and gerontology, to advance evidence-based practices.
